Below you'll find all the answers to frequently asked questions. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please get in touch using the 'Contact' tab.

What level of dance ability do I need?

The best thing to do would be to come along to both intermediate and advanced to see what suits you best! We don't require any set level of ability to attend any of our classes - they are open to everyone. If you have never danced before, you are more likely to fit in to the intermediate class - however please feel free to attend our advanced classes if you'd like more of a challenge!

When do your classes start?

Our classes will start in Week 1, after Fresher's Week, from September 25th onward. Follow our social media for updates on how these classes will operate this year.

Who can attend classes?

Anyone! You don't have to be a student at The University of Manchester - we happily accept people from outside the university to come along and dance.

Are your classes in the morning or evening?

All weekly classes will be held in the evening, the times and locations of each class are shown in our timetable.

Can I be on teams if I go to a different university in Manchester?

Yes! We accept students from MMU, Salford and RNCM.

Do I need membership to attend classes?

Nope! Membership provides you with a discounted class price, but is not compulsory to attend classes.

How much are classes?

For more information on typical class prices, please visit our 'Timetable' tab.

What should I wear to class?

Please wear whatever you feel comfortable in. We have no set regulation for class attire.

What footwear do I need for classes?

Don't feel the need to buy new dance shoes, if you want to come along any class you're welcome to dance barefoot. If you'd like to participate in our teams/show, you would need the appropriate footwear (e.g. tap shoes for tap).

When are auditions?

Auditions are  held in Week 2, so 2nd October onward. For more information on the audition timetable and how the auditions will take place this year please follow our social media or check back here in the next few weeks when we finalise this more!

What is the typical audition process?

Auditions for each style are held at the same time as the class would be. You can opt in to enter for intermediate, advanced or both. The audition itself will usually consist of some technique exercises, a set piece of choreography (taught in class), and some improv. At the end of the class, the intermediate and advanced captains will call out the members that have gotten onto their team (note that Lyrical is not split into intermediate and advanced).

Please see the event pages for specific auditions on our Facebook (these will be posted roughly two weeks before the audition).

How large are teams?

This is entirely dependent on the captain and the dances that they have planned, teams in the past have ranged from 8 to 20 people!

Can I perform in your show?

Of course! You don't need to be on a team or even a member to perform in our show. Classes begin show preparation a few weeks before the show happens (the exact amount of weeks depends on the teacher) so be sure to come along so you can pick up the routine. If you'd like to enter a solo/duet/trio or group piece, get in touch with the society using the 'Contact' tab. Note that you will have to be an active member of the society (come along to classes) in order to do this.
